My Gym Partner is a Monkey Comic cover

hey everyone,

well, to take a break from the sliver fun, i thought i'd put up a little bit o' extra work i did last week.
some of you may or may not know that i've been working as a character designer at cartoon network for the last 3 and 1/2 years. i was on Juniper Lee for most of it, and the last year or so i've been on My Gym Partner is a Monkey.
this is such a great, fun show!
i love it for all its wackiness and silly humor! it gives such a great opportunity to draw a lot of crazy designs and special poses.
anyway, i recently was asked to do the cover for the debut issue of Gym Partner in the Cartoon Network Comics from DC. just something fun on the side. i'm not gonna be able to do the inside story as i've got some prior committments that are gonna consume for a bit, but i really wanted to help out by doing the cover.
so here's the cover image. sooon i'll post some of the ruff pencil designs and poses from the show too.
enjoy and all the best!
m . . .

Why square fingers and hands?
Mignola did this with Hellboy and his designs on Atlantis...

Your father and I thought you drew wonderful, rounded fingers - what happened???

:P

don't you think it's a good idea to reduce the number of posts that are shown on the main page of your blog (formatting)? i think there are too many posts shown at once...
either way, i really like your artwork though!

Nice job, Mike!

I like the square digits, it's unique. The characters basically are a hodge-podge of geometric shapes. Very angular. Do they let you leave your signature on there, or do they remove it?

I miss Juniper Lee. Oh well, it was great while it lasted.

i miss juniper lee too :( oh well, i'll just have to wait for more comic books to come out :)

jake & adam are two of my most favorite characters ... now, if i can convince you to start working on Foster's i'd be beside myself with happiness :) [sorry, it's still my most favorite ;)]
but you are my other most favorite, does that help?

HI EVERYONE, THIS POST IS COMING FROM SKOTTIE YOUNG'S BLOG -

I THINK THIS NEEDS TO BE READ:

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the desire to be very grown up."

C.S. Lewis said this when people asked him why he wrote books for children. This reminds me to keep in mind the origin of what I love most...drawing. Before I knew what Marvel or D.C. was, before I knew what a comic book, or super hero was, I drew pictures. I love drawing. I can't recall what I liked drawing the most, probably because I drew so much there is no way to remember. I drew all the time, with any tool that created a line on paper.

Amongst the contracts, negotiations, signings, failed projects, good and bad reviews, deadlines, tussles with editors and studio execs., 35 airports a year, the same convention halls over and over, and anything else that goes along with the professional artist label...it is easy for me to forget what I wanted to do this for.

I love drawing.

That's the end of it really. I love it. I love the kid that lives here no matter how many books I sell, or how much money I put in the bank. I need to remind myself to put away the childish "desire to be very grown up." and just put pencil to paper. I never used to need anyone to like what I drew. I didn't know to want it. I just wanted to turn a blank piece of paper into something, anything, just as long as it looked fun. An animal, a world that I have never seen, a twist on the world I have. Amongst all the things that have over shadowed that ideal, I have lost the child.

After hearing this quote, I wrote it down and pinned it on the bulletin board in front of my table. That's why these warm up drawings started happening. I always told myself I didn't have time to draw anything for fun, I had to work. But, like those parents who have kids and need to make time for them no matter what...I am reminding myself to do the same.

PLEASE GO TO SKOTTIE YOUNG'S BLOG AND COMMENT THERE

AND REMIND YOURSELF TO DO THE SAME

THANKX
